Taking a Drive!!!

Ever take a drive? No, i'm not talking about the ones where you race all the way to work or school because your alarm clock went off and ur immediate reaction is to hit the snooze button, only to find yourself with a few measly seconds to shit, shower and shave. No i'm not talking about those long road trips with your friends where your friend Roger, in the backseat, all of a sudden whips out his cantene of poison and offers it to everyone, including the driver. And no i'm not talking about those drives where you get all dolled up and play the most psychedelic music to get you charged and ready for a night full of shenanigans and tragedies. I'm talking about those long drives where you have no agenda, no destinations, and no obligations. Just a drive with your thoughts and mellow music as a background.

"What do you suggest for the ambience?"

"Why some Damien Rice, Ryan Adams, or maybe even some Morcheeba would do for this occasion, sir."

It's one of my favourite things to do. In times when I just want to reflect and evaluate my next move. I grab my keys and just drive wherever the sun sets and the moon rises. I did that today. I slipped in some chilled music and just drove. It's a time for me to reflect, to come to decisions, to get all crazy with my ideas, to wonder about sliding doors, and to just meditate. With some people, mowing the lawn has therapeutic effects on one's stress levels or maybe some Jane Austin would prove suffice(FYI i'm not a fan) to calm the nerves, but for me, a drive is just the thing to do the trick.

So what did I think about today, you may be asking? well it all started off very random, like me ruling the world with my iron fist and my furrowed brow. I'd do a much better job than old George I'll have you know. From me ruling the world to current affairs such as the elections back in South Africa and how for the first time, South Africans can vote from abroad to have their say with who runs our beautiful country. I didn't take advantage of that for obvious reasons if you know my background. Needless to say to you fellow Saffas what's going on there.

Then all of a sudden a song on my cd player starts off with the most elegant of entrances. It catches my attention and my aimless thoughts are halted. You know what makes a song really attractive? It's one of two things. One, if the song is very descriptive with the story it is depicting. The painting of the picture is manifesting itself with the combination of words that is so easy to comprehend and so easy to see in the minds eyes. It takes you to the outer reaches of your imagination where the sky is purple, the grass is made of blades of silk and dolphins rule the world.

My second criteria of what makes a song attractive is the fact that the audience can relate. Countless times we listen to the words of the song and we are taken back to a moment in our livee where it seems all too familiar. A moment of love and hate.A moment of achievement or struggle. A moment of joy or sadness. Whichever the case the words seems to speak specifically to you and only you. To be more direct, the words are the soul to the song and the tune its vessel. For that one particular song you surrender yourself. I do it all the time.

So if you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or just simply want to relax.

Take a drive with some songs with some words that'll inspire you to push it a little harder and move forward in life......

The Happy Song!

So a few years back, on one of those fateful nights, a few friends and myself stumbled into the abode of my friend, Warren's, spot. We sat and had one of those early morning drinks, you know the one! Where you talk about the tragedies of the night, hours before you drunken kids stumbled to a safe house, at the crack of dawn, and proceed to engage in mindless psychobabble fueled by old Klippies and Cola til the last man says toodle loo to that long stretch of wakefullness!
So there I was, pretty cut, when all of a sudden I heard a tune that really caught me from the start!

"Who sings that song," I directed my question to whomever knew the answer.

The boys didn't know the name of the song nor did they know the artist but they branded the tune as "The Happy Song" and how true it is. Whenever I feel a little stressed, it never ceases to amaze me how this song establishes to extend the logical fallacy that everything will be more than "just ok!" It's more than just a song, it's a memory that stretches out across many years, blanketing an array of folks that have been a part my life, and triggers visual images of situations long passed. It brings the step back into my strut and why not just daydream for those 3 minutes and 28 seconds if only to believe that we lived a life littered with great memories and with funky background music to shake your donkey to. Ladies and Gentlemen, I introduce to you, the "Happy Song" ENJOY!

Just a Thought About Creating!

So how do things end up being created? I can imagine some middle class man who had an average desk job in the corporate universe stroll into the company bathroom. He opens the cubical and lo and behold lies before him the greatest invention to aid one of the worst of our habits, physiologically speaking of course. He starts to unbuckle his belt and assume the position that every living person would assume at some stage of their life or another, unless of course there's that one individual who can pull off the whole "standing up routine". I guaran-damn-tee you if someone could pull that off, I don't expect that particular person to get a standing ovation but there are a few people that would be impressed. Anyway back to our ordinary man.....there he is sitting and conducting Valsalva maneuvers when he realises that there is a measly looking roll of toilet paper left on the holder consisting of one good length he could use. In a state of panic he rattles his noggin for an idea to solve this problem.

"What to do, what to do?" he says to himself.

He can't walk back into the office smelling like some geriatric from hospice. He begins to look under the other cubital and maybe pull a switcheroo, but as he lowers his head to that open space that seperate the bathroom stalls, he notices a pair of black Bally shoes, Armani pin striped pants, a belt fashioned to replicate a snake, and ........a pink G-string? Now there's a story for the boys but not without the price of losing a bit of face.He darts his head back up into the faux squat and can't believe his luck. A couple of silent curses are looping through his mind right now

"What to do, what to do?" he says to himself.

If I was a narrator throughout this whole scene at this time, I would probably say something like "without up there is no down, without a left there is no........," and pause for a few seconds before our character realises that he does have the other cubical to explore. He slowly lowers his head and takes a peek. No one there but the door is open. He might have to pull a Speedy Gonzales. How embarrassing if our poor friend, were to be caught by his co-workers. He literally would be caught with his pants down pulling some inexplicable move in some baffling position. As he was about to make his move, 2 guys walk in talking about their conquests the night before. Damn his luck

"What to do, what to do?" he says to himself.

Now we'll cut to the point where he walks back into the office and sits at his shabby looking desk and asks himself, "Why doesn't anybody invent something that holds multiple toilet rolls?"

A pause after this question and like a hammer to the head, he has just come up with an idea to make millions and millions of clams. It is at this point a co-worker walks into his cubical looks down at his feet and asks, "Where's your socks?"

The whole point of this long story, that I have depicted, is to give you the sense of how things are created. In extreme situations, it is hard not to walk away a stronger and smarter person, if one should survive the experience. It is in these instances where we are driven to better ourselves and our environment. We are creative beings but we are uninspired, creative beings. It takes situations like our friend above, to create something so that no other being can go through what he had to go through. It takes situations like war for example, for people to be motivated to develop weapons of mass destruction in order to protect their country from terrorists and cause even more pointless killings that number in the millions. It takes situations like a loss of a loved one to be inspired to better ourselves, not take those close to us for granted, and push our spirit and soul to the absolute edge. It is in these instances that we gain our thoughts and ideas so that we may know, "what could be". It is then our responsibility to convert these ideas into words so that we may let other people know, "what could be", and from there we have even more of a responsibility to develop our actions so that our thoughts may become reality. It is at this point you come to be proud of yourself of not what could be, but what actually is.

I've lived in America for 3 years now and it seems like they have created everything under the sun. It ranges from the very useful, efficient and effective devices to the useless, over-priced, and not as yielding ones. I'm not looking to invent anything to revolutionize the technological age. I am, however, planning to write a book though, and concentrate on writing music. Writing and music are 2 things I feel deeply about. I'm gonna see where it takes me because given the past month, I am now inspired. For now it is just a thought and one I plan to create. Through my actions I will prove to have directed myself closer to perfection. I've developed a quote about perfection and posted it on my facebook account.

It is our job to create things more marvelous than anything before them but never to obtain perfection. Perfection only brings despair. As a creative being of society, I must come to terms with finding ecstasy while suffering with that antinomy!

Blessings in Disguise!

There comes a time in a person's life where we make decisions. Decisions that we might end up regretting, decisions that would take us to the very edge before our body gives that extra dose of adrenalin to finally make the choice. Sometimes we might experience cognitive dissonance, second guessing ourselves to the point where we are driven to insanity and we end up taking the podium for Heath Ledger's role in the Dark Knight. Without the makeup though. Then I was sitting on the porch like the porch monkey that I am, and ended up dwelling on my decisions. I realised if I did anything it was for the best. As irrational as some feelings are, I prevailed and realised that the apple may not have been as appealing as before, or the purchase I made was smart because I bought something useful, or the lady that I broke up with was not worth the time of day to waste my energy and time. So here I am standing, a man accumulated with decisions. Some I might regret, but the ones that really matter......? I strongly believe for now, they are blessings in disguise and as time passes the ugly truth is revealed about the path that could of have been taken and the roses starting budding on the path I have chosen.

Enter the Pie Factor!!!

You know what's so great about this funny world of ours, it's filled with characters. Most are as forgettable as that 90's song that had the catchy tune and ludicrous chorus with nonsensical words, and a well articulated dance to accompany it, that caught on at the time. Then there are those who were above the norm, the one's that made you laugh hysterically, laid down the towel on their shoulder for you to shed your tears, and listened attentively to your problems as well as stimulate your mind. Crisis, if only we were all like that, but then how would we stand out from the next person. We all seek that particular person, whether it be a your closest mate or that Sigmund Freud look-a-like that provides that outside perspective to just release that burden that you've been arduously lugging around for a while. It's impossible to say that one person is liked by all. There's always at least that one person that is judging you, hating you for who you are and constantly criticizing your indifference. The problem is, the majority of people acknowledge that and here's where the real problem begins to interfere with one's life. What do I say to that? To quote Cliff Spab, S.F.W. If you haven't watched the movie, get off your donkey and track this gem of a cult movie down. I'll end it there.

But here I am, voicing my opinions and craving your input.
